Open Monuments
Weekend - Fort Vechten
saturday 10
and Sunday 11 September 2005 |
We
teamed up with Legio X Gemina again for our second Open
Monuments weekend. No separate locations this time, but a
full weekend at the tower. Saturday turned out to be
quite good, despite persistent warnings of heavy showers,
which the public seemed to have taken notice of. Nevertheless,
when the sun kept shining (it was hot and damp) their
numbers swelled. During late afternoon the clouds
suddenly seemed to form thunderstorms, so we loaded up
the car in a hurry, to leave the Legion to guard the camp
and tower..
..well, they had the day of the year! Gemina is
always willing to turn a birthday into something
special. |
And the kids loved it! They all carried a pilum
and a scutum.. |
Me and Chariovalda lounging about in the
camp of Leg. X Gemina. |
More kids hiding behind the large scutum.. |
Suddenly.. |
..the skies darken and thunderclouds start
billowing high in the afternoon sky. |
Like many visitors, we decided that closing time
was leaving time! |
The
Rain did not fall then, but it did during the night! We
expected a flooded site, but the grass was hardly wet -
apparently, the Romans chose a well-drained spot for
their fort and the surrounding vicus. Next morning, all
was grey and damp, no wind at all. Nontheless, many
visitors turned up and things got quite busy.
Unfortunately, not for me as I had to remain home to care
for a sick kid.
An impressive array of shields, but not every scutum
has a miles to carry it.. |
Lonely Late Roman, impressive nonetheless - Chariovalda
the Salian Frank. |
Camp life. |
Camp fun. |
Gas attack!?! |
