School visit - Fort Vechten
Friday 11 July 2008

I had been contacted by the stichting Zuilen en Vecht about an upcoming visit of two classes (9 to 10-year olds) to the orchard now overlying the ancient castellum of Fectio. De society receives subisidies to promote several gardens and parks within the province of Utrecht. One of the sites of interest is the Fectio orchard. As part of a promotion package they also organise school visits to the site, and they asked me to lend a hand in making it more 'real' for the children.
Fort Vechten, southeast of Utrecht.

Detailed image of the area.

Well, when the bus stopped, a 40-odd children spilled out, ready to be marched offf to the orchard. before entering I gave them an introduction into the Roman military and the history of the place., which they seemed to enjoy. Afterwards they marched across the orchard and into the (quite muddy!) labyrinth that had just that week been created in the cornfield between the orchard and the tower.
